There are reasons why people have to know their history. One reason for knowing history, particularly ones own history, is to learn more about oneself, and to get a better grip on the direction one is going. African American, or black, rarely know their history. Their history for the most part stops after being brought to the shores of America, and beyond that there is not much to know or learn about.

The Reason for Black History Knowledge

When your history is negative and degrading, such as black Americas’s history, it can be discouraging and not worth learning and studying. This is probably the case when it comes to black Americans, the children today are tired of the same slave story, they are tired of the old negro spirituals, thus they disassociate with this history and focus on everything else the world has to offer.

This leads down a path of lack of knowledge and lack of cultural identity. Therefore, it is imperative to learn about black history, so you can learn more about yourself, and where you are going as a black man or woman, individually and as a people.

You have to study it well for yourself because, the truth of many facts is that people will not tell you about your history. We are a self absorbed type-beings by nature, thus other people’s history are irrelevant to me, and my history is irrelevant to them. Therefore, I must seek out my own history for myself, because other people may only tell me a 10th of the story.
